Who is Frume Sarah?
Oh, and about the name…
Yes, it is a character from Fiddler on the Roof and no, that isn’t my favourite musical. Nor is my name Sarah. I have nothing against the name; it just isn’t mine. However, long ago, I earned the nickname from my dad as a reflection of my tendency of leaning towards the right. Religiously, that is. The name stuck and I embraced it to the point that the title of the twenty-five page theological statement required as partial fulfillment of my MAHL was “They Don’t Call Me Frume Sarah for Nothing.”

Frume Sarah is Shabbos-observant -- in a Reform way, that is. Please note that from Friday afternoons until one hour after sundown on Saturday evenings, Frume Sarah will be unavailable, in observance of the Jewish Sabbath.
Comments made during this time will be held in a queue, to be moderated afterwards.

we are organizing the ING europe-marathon in Luxembourg, Europe, and this year, 3. Mai 2008, we want to put up a religious relay. I saw your article about the running rabbi and thought, that you might be interested to run in the relay. The distance would be 8-10 kilometres. The flight would go on us.
The other runners are of all kinds of religions like Catholism, Islam…

Hello, my name is Westley, I am not Jewish, and this will be a strange post. I just woke up from a dream, a very vivid one.
In this dream, I met a woman, that looked to be about my age or younger (I am 28). This woman is quite literally the woman of my dreams.
In my dream, I asked her for her name, and she said something that sounded like “froom”, and then disappeared.
I know it sounds crazy, but I’ve never heard this word before, and sometimes dreams can be more than dreams, so I searched on Google for anything spelled like “froom”, “frum”, “frume” or anything like it. And it brought me here.
Could you or anyone else here tell me what this means? Was this just some random working of my subconscious, or does it mean something else?
What are the odds that I would hear in my dream a Yiddish word that means something like “holy or devout”, when I’ve never heard this word before in my life?
Please tell me I’m not crazy.

Not sure how I stumbled onto your site, but Frume Sarah is the Hebrew name of my daughter and my grandmother before her. Needless to say,my grandmother got quite a kick out of her name being made famous in “Fiddler”. The annoying thing about that name is that when some Orthodox Jews here her Hebrew name, they criticize it because “Frume” is Yiddish, not Hebrew. It was also the name of my Grandmother’s grandmother. They have the right to criticize Orthodox Rabbis in Russia who considered it acceptable 150 years ago?
Anyway, it’s fun to see the name used for a Rabbi’s blog. Thanks.
