Who is Frume Sarah?
Oh, and about the name…
Yes, it is a character from Fiddler on the Roof and no, that isn’t my favourite musical. Nor is my name Sarah. I have nothing against the name; it just isn’t mine. However, long ago, I earned the nickname from my dad as a reflection of my tendency of leaning towards the right. Religiously, that is. The name stuck and I embraced it to the point that the title of the twenty-five page theological statement required as partial fulfillment of my MAHL was “They Don’t Call Me Frume Sarah for Nothing.”

Any chance you are the same Frume Sarah with whom I went to AMHSI in 1987? Ye of “Dirty Dancing” fame? If so, please email me back! I came across your blog totally randomly and would love to say hi.
(Of course, if you’re a different Frume Sarah, then hello to you, happy Monday, and congratulations on your newest addition.)
One and the same!! How are you??
Great! Send me an email with your email address and I’ll write you properly.
I stumbled onto your blog after searching for info about raising Jewish kids in a secular/Christian world.
I love your blog.
My husband is a reform rabbi, who is also at the URJ Biennial right now.
And I wonder if you were classmates, as you seem familiar from your blog.
Ah, well. Thanks for blogging . . . you’re setting a good example as a Jewish parent!
Meira (I’ll share my English name only in a private email!)
Hi,
we are organizing the ING europe-marathon in Luxembourg, Europe, and this year, 3. Mai 2008, we want to put up a religious relay. I saw your article about the running rabbi and thought, that you might be interested to run in the relay. The distance would be 8-10 kilometres. The flight would go on us.
The other runners are of all kinds of religions like Catholism, Islam…
If you are interested don’t hesitate to contact us!
Best Regards
Kerstin
Thanks Kertsin. Sadly, my running days are behind me due to (shockingly) a lack of time. Otherwise it sounds amazing 😉
I am sorry to hear that.
If you know anyone else who would be interested to run in the relay, just let me know.
Otherwise I wish a all the best for the future.
Kerstin

Frume Sarah,
On the chance that you may be interested in a little blog that intentionally seeks the most diverse people of faith it can find yet definitely is from the Christian side : full information-no solicitation, and all in the name of the unity of humankind.
“changing the world, one Jew at a time” sounds like you might just be the one we’re missing-the one that will help us see the Jewish faith through your eyes and words.
That your time. I plan to be at this a while, and whether you drop by the blog, I will try to visit yours again to see what the life of a reformed rabbi looks like.
Shalom
Dear John Paul,
Thanks for stopping by FrumeSarah’s world!!
Wow. The more time I spend here the more I’m drawn in and so, so impressed! This is just so awesome. YOU’RE so awesome!!
I think you should start fantasizing about moving to Dallas now! 🙂 Your brother and sister in law and niece want you down here! Miss and love you.
Frume Sarah,
This is a great site! I recently started a site of my own to help the Jewish community. (www.yeahthatskosher.com)
Maybe you’d have some interest in writing about it or doing an interview for your blog.
Let me know.

Hello Frume Sarah,
This might be a strange request but I was wondering if I could perhaps ask you a few basic questions about the Jewish funeral. I will be going to one (soon, unfortunately). I am not Jewish, but I want to respect the family and do not want to do or wear or say anything that might offend anybody. If you wouldn’t mind, please email me. Thanks very much! -Dawn
Hello! i am an 18-year-old Christian looking to convert to Judaism. What can you advise me- im interested in your thoughts!
Shalom, Rabbi OomLaut;
We missed you Friday evening. Sorry you were feeling ill.
Get well soon, please.
Hello, my name is Westley, I am not Jewish, and this will be a strange post. I just woke up from a dream, a very vivid one.
In this dream, I met a woman, that looked to be about my age or younger (I am 28). This woman is quite literally the woman of my dreams.
In my dream, I asked her for her name, and she said something that sounded like “froom”, and then disappeared.
I know it sounds crazy, but I’ve never heard this word before, and sometimes dreams can be more than dreams, so I searched on Google for anything spelled like “froom”, “frum”, “frume” or anything like it. And it brought me here.
Could you or anyone else here tell me what this means? Was this just some random working of my subconscious, or does it mean something else?
What are the odds that I would hear in my dream a Yiddish word that means something like “holy or devout”, when I’ve never heard this word before in my life?
Please tell me I’m not crazy.
Rebecca,
It’s Lauren from HUC, your classmate from HUC. After reading your FB updates about being sick, I took the law into my own hands to find out what has been going on with your health. Found the blog, blah, blah, blah. I like the blog. Please continue to rest. I’m thinking of you.
Refuah Sheleimah (notice the sheleimah part, please.)
Love,
Lauren
Hello Frume Sarah,
I noticed your “available 24/6 message” and was hoping you could talk a little bit about what being Shabbos-observant in a reform way means to you. I have been doing a lot of thinking on the topic lately and would appreciate your insight. Please feel free to email me. Thank you for your help.
Helen
Hi Frume Sarah, I’m writing to let you know about a service award we are offering for mitzvah (pre)teens. We have really been inspired by the service projects our young customers have been doing, and will be giving the award honoree free invitations and thank you notes for her or his bat/bar mitzvah. Details are posted at: http://www.twistedlimbpaper.com/tikkunolamaward.htm. Is this something you would be interested in blogging about? Thanks for your consideration, Sheryl
Thanks for dubbing me another “Cool Jewess” !
Hi, Frume Sarah … found your blog in very random fashion–linked out of Wikipedia somehow–and really enjoying the posts here.
In return, I thought I would share a couple of links with you and your readers. Great Jewish music from a NY radio program at http://jmintheam.org/ (and lots of Jewish world info from the show’s host at http://www.nachumsegal.com/). And the blog of a Congregational minister (and friend of Rabbi Jack Bloom’s) while she was studying abroad for a year in Jerusalem, http://fromathinplace.blogspot.com/
Thanks for sharing so much of yourself with your readers. Blessings to you, your family and congregation. Gut shabbes! -Mike
Frume Sarah,
Reading your blog is a mechaya! 😉
Thank you!

{{blushing}} Aw, shucks!
What’s up, I just found your blog. How long has it been up? I really like all the stuff you post about, it’s very informative. Catch you later!
Hi, I just wanted to take the time to leave a comment and tell you how much I like your blog, and I think what you write about is very interesting. Please keep updating your blog and I will be back to check it often.
Hi Frume Sarah–
Enjoy your blog! I thought you and your readers might enjoy a website I just discovered: savethemusic.com
It’s a collection of Jewish music available for free streaming. It appears to be sponsored by a non-profit organization that is digitizing old LPs and putting the music on the web. I’m not sure how they get around the copyright issue. Still, I’ve had a lot of fun listening to golden oldies from my youth.
As a former travel agent specializing in trips to Israel and Eastern Europe along with conference planning for several Jewish groups, I have a seemingly unique love and respect for your religion. Thank you for continuing to feed that!
(I have moved on to another Life for now and now work in education so no more daily calls to Israel or greetings of Boker Tov in the mornings…)
Hi Frume Sarah: I’d like to talk with you a bit about the The Global Day of Jewish Learning. We’re building out a blogger program, and I think you’d be a great fit and find it meaningful, as well. Is there a good way to be in touch? Email? Skype? Old fashioned phone?
Thanks in advance!
Email is always the easiest! frummiehouse at gmail dot com
And thanks for thinking of me!
Thanks for the comment on my blog! How in the world did you find it? I am so glad you left it since it directed me to yours and I can certainly learn a thing or two from you, as I am a newby blogger!
Brian also sent me the photo from your recent reunion. So cool…..thanks for reaching out and please keep in touch!
Dina
Ah the wonders of the internet 😉
I looked for you first on Facebook…and then kept looking. So glad we could reconnect.
“Punctuality is the thief of time. Wilde I never travel without my diary. One should always have Something sensational to read in the train.”
Not sure how I stumbled onto your site, but Frume Sarah is the Hebrew name of my daughter and my grandmother before her. Needless to say,my grandmother got quite a kick out of her name being made famous in “Fiddler”. The annoying thing about that name is that when some Orthodox Jews here her Hebrew name, they criticize it because “Frume” is Yiddish, not Hebrew. It was also the name of my Grandmother’s grandmother. They have the right to criticize Orthodox Rabbis in Russia who considered it acceptable 150 years ago?
Anyway, it’s fun to see the name used for a Rabbi’s blog. Thanks.
Just a quick thank you for linking regularly to my blog, Truth, Praise and Help. Much appreciated!
Renee
My pleasure. I really enjoy your blog. I learn a lot over at TPH 😉
Dear Frume Sarah–
I can’t believe we both in live in California and we haven’t had an IC reunion yet! It’s been almost 15 years (gulp!) since u-grad. We’re overdue for a singalong. By the way…Happy Mother’s Day!!!
