No Cool Riders

Thursday, 26 August 2010

Our morning commute is often punctuated with the motorcycles roaring past us, splitting lanes as they go.

So help me God if you ever date a guy who rides a motorcycle, Poppyseed.

Poppyseed: “Oh, you don’t have to worry about that, Mama. I won’t date a boy who rides a motorcycle.”

[For the record, we really were discussing motorcycles.]

FrumeSarah: “How do you know that?”
Poppyseed: “I’ll ask him before our first date. And if I forget, I’ll ask during the date. And if the answer is yes, I’ll just dump him.”

She is only seven. But a good time, I figured, to have a talk. And so we discussed what are the important qualities in a husband and a boyfriend. And how your last boyfriend (who might also be your first) will also be your husband.

Poppyseed’s List:

  • not mean
  • funny; makes me laugh
  • tall like my daddy
  • smart
  • Jewish
  • For a kid, she’s got a pretty good list so far.

My 8 year olds criteria for a wife – “she has to like my Ima’s cooking!!”

So cute! Once when Danny was little, I teased him by saying, “If you love chocolate so much, why don’t you marry it?” and he said, “Mom, I can’t marry chocolate…it isn’t Jewish!”

Which is proof that sharing our expectations with our kids early and often have a greater chance of being internalized.

      I adore your boys!

Yeah, it was funny to imagine the boy who one day, God-willing, will fit the bill.

Geez… at 7, she knows WAY more about what she wants in a partner than I did at 30!! I LOVE that “Jewish” was on her list! She is wise beyond her years!! (Oh… and good news about her view on dating motorcycle riders – when my sister’s date pulled up on a motorcycle, my Dad (z”l)flipped out. As a result, she married a man who owns three of them).

On her own, she said that it’s stupid to be riding fast when all you have is a helmet to protect you.

I, for one, am glad. I have buried two different young men who died as a result of motorcycle vs. automobile. And NEITHER rider was at fault.

A list at seven is no guarantee of anything other than the conversation has been started. Going back to the whole expectation theme, I can’t expect the kids to know what our expectations are if we don’t discuss them throughout their growing up years.

And while you took a little longer to figure out what you needed in a life partner, you ended up with the person who was meant to be with you.

Poppyseed has compiled an excellent list! Although I’ve got four decades on her, I’ve been using a similar list for quite a while. When the time is right, may she find a mensch who fits the bill…and may I find one a little sooner! 🙂
