With the MegaMillion jackpot at a whopping $355M, I spent a few moments lost in outlandish reverie, contemplating what things I could do with an insane amount of money.
Standing on one foot…
- HUGE endowment for the shul — may they never have to worry about money again.
- large donation to Mazon-The Jewish Response to Hunger.
- establish a complete ASD program at URJ Camp Newman.
- buy an apartment for my sister.
- pay off our mortgage.
- college funds for the kids.
- full-time ASD specialist for Beernut.
- apartment in Israel for an annual trip — or two.
- go back to school for doctorate and an MFA — though not necessarily in that order.
What would you do with that kind of money?

hilarious – we have almost the same exact list. mine involves endowing a chair (of something, i haven’t quite figured out what) at HUC and a few spare college funds for some extra needy kids….
but i have the Israel apartment and private plane to shuttle us there regularly on my list 🙂
How about an endowment for mandated therapy for all rabb students. Not a joke. I think it would be a wonderful addition to helping us cope with the intense growth that occurs during school.
I wouldn’t want a private plane. I love going to the airport and all that stuff. Commercial would be fine…though we’d go business 😉
That’s funny, I would also buy an apartment for your sister.
I love you.
I’d do the endowment to the Canadian Yeshiva, with enough left over for Dustin to start his own Yeshiva after they give him smicha.
Day school/college funds for the kids I don’t yet have.
Apt in Yerushalyim and savings to be able to travel there worry free.
Large donations to Ramah in the Rockies and Gift of Life.
Build a true community mikvah w/space for classes and buy a house in the ‘hood so I could always come back and teach classes there.
(wow, i’m jew-y!)
Which is why you belong with the rest of us jew-y types.
Yay Mikvah!!!!!
I too think about this when the Lotto gets so high. I look forward to the day when I can be the philanthropist I dream of being. There are so many important causes that are severely underfunded. But right now, my eyes are bigger than my wallet. 🙂 Personally, at the top of my list would be taking my parents to Israel. They’ve wanted to go for several years and the time has never been right.
Are you kidding??? There is never a wrong time to go. There are some times that are more hectic than others. Get them there…..now!!!!! That should be first on the list 😉
So after all the good things to do and the right things to go (Like almost everything you mentioned). . . I would completely staff out my house with a full-time housekeeper, cook, personal trainer–the works!
Whoops…I had private pilates session 2x/week on my original list. Slipped off somehow…
Oh and one other thing — two identical kitchens. With the dining room in-between.
I’ve been daydreaming about that too. I would also take care of my congregation, and favorite charities, and my family. And then I would take at least a year off from work and go study Torah and Talmud somewhere.
That would be time (and money) well spent!!
