Ode to a Wooden Spoon

Tuesday, 15 March 2011

1996~2011

Thou slender, lean with dependent strength
Thou hast turned throughout the years.
Mixing, folding with perfect faith
Cherished recipes that act as mirrors.
Pancakes with secret ingredients,
Hamantaschen, prune or mohn?
Serving once to dull the pain of penetrating wounds, now gone.
Dinners blended with rapt expedience
Turning, swirling like a song.
Thou shalt be for a memory of when mine brood wast young.

Sorry about your kuch leffel, but what a lovely tribute you’ve written. May its replacement bring you many more delicious meals and–most important–lots of sweet memories.

It’s funny how a well used wooden spoon is “better” than a brand new one- hope the new one is just as good to you. Sweet tribute:)

Todah! It feels so different from my other one…I must use it a lot and break it in, I think.

That’s great. At least it went doing what it did best, mixing cookie dough for yummy hamantaschen. Although, it’s timing could have been better (hadn’t added the vanilla just yet).

Hopefully you can make many more memories with your new wooden spoon.

Spoons, that is. Thanks for the replacement. They are snuggling into their new home quite nicely.

Cherish those fond lifetime memories down kitchen utensil lane. The food will never taste the same again. The spoon finally met itas fate with fork. Haha!

I very much like your poem, but I do point out that this is Ode TO a Wooden Spoon. The reason that John Keat’s ode was Ode ON a Grecian Urn is that his ode is about how the figure themselves on the Grecian urn are like an ode. And ode less traveled by….

I know, I know. And it’s been corrected.

I really think it is because Mrs. C, with whom we learned Keat’s ode, DRILLED the title into our head. A subconscious slip on my part. Thanks for the correction!

Hi Frume Sarah! Thanks for linking to my “mohn” filling recipe. These kitchen tools do become our friends, don’t they? I’ve named my kitchen knife Mordechai. Hoping I’ll never have to write him a tribute… Wishing you a fun 4th of July weekend! 🙂
