A Rite of Passage

Monday, 29 November 2010

I am on the precipice.
With my 30’s quickly drawing to a close.
My best years yet to come.
And so I spent part of my morning in a robe that opened in the front.
Still dressed from the waist down.
Momentary discomfort,
necessary.
A base-line “portrait”
Of the breasts that have nourished my babies.

Thank You, God, for technology.
For health insurance.
For gentle hands.

For life.

Good for you! (By the way, a great cartoon.)

Thanks. It’s a copy of the one that has been hanging on my parents’ fridge for years.

      Now I get it.

I had a very similar experience when I had my first mammogram (just a few short years ago). I was a little nervous at what they might find, scared that the downside of having full breasts was having more space for a lump to hide. I feel very thankful for technology and good doctors.

Oddly enough, I was not worried at all that they would find anything. I am crazy-regular about BSEs. So anything that it would have picked up would have been really, really small.

And, in fact, report came back “normal.”
