A Wish Fulfilled
I love bananas.
Here you go, baby.
I’m all filled up.
Good job, sweetheart.
Still hungry, Mommy.
You mean Daddy. Say Daddy.”
That’s right. Peach asked for, and received, Baby All Gone for Chanukah. Sending him into previously- unknown heights of delight. And yes, Peach is my three year old son.
Blame it on “Free to Be You & Me,” if you wish. Like many of my generation, that LP was part of the soundtrack of my formative years. Teaching about gender equality in an informal and natural way. Included was a song entitled “William’s Doll,” based on a book with the same title. The message? If boys are expected to be nurturing fathers, they ought to be given equal opportunity to practice during their creative play.
So when Peach asked for Baby All Gone, I naturally added it to his wish list. For the past several days, he has fed her. Given her a bottle. And though the doll doesn’t make crying sounds, Peach comes running when he “hears” her crying.
It’s ok, sweetheart, Daddy’s here.”
If Peach’s creative play is any indication, I think he’s going to be a great dad someday.
“You mean Daddy. Say Daddy.” That is totally sweet and kind of sad.
I don’t know much about dolls these days. Do you know if there is one that says, ‘Daddy?’
I’m going to be on the look-out because I really think that should be an option.
I overheard him this morning, “I’ve told you a hundred times — I’m DADDY.”
Pirates and Baby All Gone.-that’s what little boys are made of!
So true. And Batman. Don’t forget Batman.
Beautiful. Someday he’ll make a wonderful daddy.
Free to be You and Me was, and is, one of my very favorite things.

Um…did you leave this comment before or after you went into labour??? Mazal tov on the safe delivery of Baby Boy.
Good for you, good for Peach and good for FTBYandM.
When my sister was about Peach’s age, she had a play date with a little boy in the neighborhood. After she’d gone home, the following conversation ensued between the boy and his mother:
Little Boy: “Amy’s a funny name for a boy.”
Mother: “Why do you think Amy’s a boy?”
Little Boy: “She has short hair, she wears pants and she plays with trucks!”
Ha! That is funny.
I still own a copy and I still get crazy when I hear Billy’s got a doll. Didn’t like it, wasn’t cool for my generation of boys. We didn’t have dolls, they were action figures.
First of all, it’s “William’s Doll.” Does it seem possible that a kid named ‘Billy’ would play with dolls? Next, action figures do not encourage nurturing. Which probably explains a lot, in your case. In any event, Peach has action figures as well. He’s an equal opportunist.
Action figures and dolls are not the same thing.
